Naming the Invisible Load of Modern Life
The Care Load: An Interpretation
I’m in the bathroom washing my face before the day begins.
The faucet runs. The mirror fogs. The house is still intact.
It feels quiet. It feels real.
And then it lands:
I can’t run this morning.
There’s an 8 a.m. interview.
Already, I’m holding timelines. People. Expectations.
I’m not reacting to a crisis.
I’m preparing for one that might never come.
I’m not late. I’m not behind. But I can feel the day narrowing.
This isn’t anxiety. It’s vigilance.
The quiet responsibility of keeping things from slipping.
Of ensuring what must happen today has already been thought through—
before anyone else needs it.
This holding doesn’t end when I leave the bathroom.
It follows me into meetings, into conversations, into transitions.
While one thing is happening, I am accounting for the next.
What needs deciding.
What cannot be dropped.
Who will need something later.
This is the Care Load.
The Care Load is the invisible labor of holding responsibility,
mentally, emotionally, logistically, so that life continues to function.
It is anticipatory awareness.
It is constant internal accounting.
It is carrying forward what others may never notice is being carried.
Unlike the “mental load,” which names tasks,
the Care Load names vigilance.
It is not a personality flaw.
It is not poor time management.
It is not simply anxiety, though it can resemble it.
It exists because responsibility exists.
Because someone must hold the thread.
Because certain roles—by expectation, by circumstance—
are positioned to keep everything else moving.
It isn’t about doing more.
It’s about holding more.
Staying ahead.
Preventing unraveling before it becomes visible.
Absorbing friction before it reaches the room.
And often, doing so without pause.
Without recognition.
Without language.
This is that language.

From the Studio: While we use this space to name and interpret the systems we carry, we also believe in witnessing the messy reality with a bit of humor.
